The interview guide was developed using theories of motivation and adult learning. Self-determination theory, social cognitive theory, and cognitive load theory all interrelate as theories that explain humans’ intrinsic motivation for learning. SDT emphasizes humans need to relate to community and strive for competency, whereas SCT describes the influence of community on human motivation and sense of self-efficacy.
